Symbol supported letter to Santa

In this strange time of a global pandemic, we will not be visiting Santa, we’ve been talking a lot about writing letters. My 9 year old looked at me like I had 3 heads when I started talking about actually writing letters to Santa. You know, pencil to paper #parentfail

I started dreading the letter writing process and trying to figure out how to make this fun for my oldest. Carter has Autism and significant cognitive delays. He doesn’t know his letters and hates all writing activities. I wasn’t about to sit down with him and force some hand-over-hand weirdness just to check the Santa letter box. I started making this tool for him and thought others may be struggling with same things. Please share this page with all you know who may benefit from a symbol supported letter to Santa.

It is my heart’s desire that my son one day be able to interact in this world with literacy. Man, is it difficult to think he may never have the joy of getting lost in a novel or waste countless hours reading through news, social media, or online shopping. Okay, maybe those last couple will be a blessing.

I’m always trying to incorporate different literacy activities in everyday life. This is an easy one! It’s Christmas and Santa for goodness sakes! I’ve created this document to be simple and individualized. Some picture symbols are here ready to be cut and pasted in. You can also search for online pictures or cut out of catalogs. We will likely be cutting out of a catalog we already have all marked up.

This letter would be great for anyone with disabilities that impact reading and writing. It would also benefit toddlers and preschools who are exploring words, pictures, and letters to Santa! We’re all doing what we can this year since there will be no train rides and no sitting on Santa’s lap. Hope you enjoy! Check out this FREE resource!
